The celebration will be held offline for all Chinese and foreign students at Yunnan Normal University, and will start with folk songs and dances, musical instruments, and sports performances, followed by a folklore park tour where students can experience traditional Chinese talents and learn traditional Chinese culture.
Event Schedule
(Venue: square outside the West Gate of the Tongxi 2 Building on Chenggong campus, Yunnan Normal University) Highlights Preview
The first 100 Chinese and foreign students who arrive at the venue will be issued with a "fete ticket" and will receive a stamp after experiencing one folklore project. Once they collect 9 stamps, they can win a prize of Chinese style.
Participating Chinese and foreign students will experience the following traditional Chinese talents with professional teachers as follows:
Archery
Chinese archery originates from the Six Arts by Confucianism, and is an ancient Chinese activity that combines sports, culture and art. It does not only require the archer to have excellent archery skills, but also demands a high degree of harmony between body, mind, and bow and arrow of the archer in order to express the pursuit of noble character and the desire and enjoyment of the beauty of strength and accuracy.
Martial Arts
Martial art is an inherited technology of ancient military warfare. The practice of martial arts can strengthen one’s body and can also defend oneself against enemy attacks. Martial arts practitioners take “Invasion Prevention” as a technical guidance to lead practitioners to understand the objective laws of man, nature and society as a traditional way of education. Such education is a guide and guarantee of human material civilization, as well as a showcase of contemporary traditional martial arts.
Sugar Painting
Sugar painting was formed around the Ming Dynasty, and in the process of spreading, it absorbed the presentation of "shadow puppet" and "folk paper cutting". In the Qing Dynasty, sugar painting became more popular and the subjects were more extensive, mostly popular auspicious figures such as dragon, phoenix, fish and monkey. When making sugar painting, the refined brown sugar (or white sugar) is heated and melted in a copper ladle, then the ladle is used as a brush and the liquid sugar is used as ink, the artist concentrates on the wrist and shakes, lifts, pauses, drizzles and collects the liquid sugar on the polished marble plate, then attaches a bamboo stick to the hot sugar. When it’s cool and solid, the artist shovels the sugar figurine off from the plate.
knotting
Chinese knot is a unique Chinese hand-woven craft, which originally started from sewing and tying knots in the Paleolithic era, then extended to the Han Dynasty for rituals and events marking, and then evolved into today's decorative craft.
Dough Figurines
Commonly known as "flower mold" and "dough figurines making". Flour as the main material is mixed into different colors, and artists use their hands and simple tools to create various lifelike characters.
Rubbing technique
Rubbings are made by carefully pressing paper onto the text and pictures of gold and stone objects, and then printed with ink. Because this technique is mainly applied to gold and stone artifacts, such as inscriptions, epitaphs, oracle characters, pottery characters, bronze inscriptions, jade patterns, eaves tile’s patterns, portrait stones, bronze mirrors, currency, bronze utensils, etc., it is also called gold stone rubbing technique.
Pyrography
Also known as "Fire Needle Embroidery", pyrography is a treasure of traditional Chinese art. The artists heat the soldering iron with fire to burn marks on objects to paint. This art form adopts the methods of drawing, outlining, pointing, dyeing, rubbing, and plain drawing in traditional Chinese painting. By burning it can also create rich layers and hues with a strong three-dimensional effect, resembling brown sketches and lithographs.
paper-cutting
Paper cutting, as an ancient Chinese folk art, is one of the Chinese culture symbols. It uses paper, bark, leaves, cloth, leather and other materials to achieve the purpose of artistic creation through the techniques of cutting, carving, tearing, and ironing and so on.
In addition, students will experience six folklore fete activities: lantern riddles guessing, face painting, calligraphy writing, Chinese style clothing dressing, sachets making, and pitch pot.
Yunnan Chinese Language and Culture College and the School of International Chinese Studies of Yunnan Normal University will conduct a full coverage on the event, report the whole process of the university Chinese and foreign students' participation in International Chinese Language Day 2023, and show the audience that Chinese and foreign students are immersed in the Chinese culture and civilizational dialogue is enhanced in the exchanges and communication in Chinese.
